Guided by the planet Mercury, Sailor Mercury is the first senshi to appear on the show after Sailor Moon. As Ami Mizuno, she is a real genius, rumored to have an I.Q. of 300. She is a quiet and shy girl, and doesn't have much of a social life. She spends her free time engaged in her studies or with her eyes in a book. She goes to junior high with Usagi and Makoto at Juuban Junior High, and later to Juuban High School. She has sort of a relationship with Ryo Urawa, though she has a hard time admitting it. Ami had a chance to study abroad to achieve her dreams of being a doctor, but realized she wasn't ready and didn't take it.

As Sailor Mercury, although she is the weakest of the inner senshi, she is the brains of the operation. In battle, she uses her mini-computer and her VR visor to find the weaknesses of the enemies. Her attacks are mostly defensive, though they seem more offensive as the seasons pass. Her attacks are also water based. She is also the quickest of the senshi in terms of reactions and thinking.

Sailor Mercury's fuku is a blue skirt, a blue collar with two white stripes, blue choker, a light blue bow in the front with a blue button and a light blue bow in the back, and she has a blue earring on each ear. When she becomes Super Sailor Mercury, she has three earrings on each ear, her button becomes a heart, her sleeves have a transparent cap, and the bow on the back becomes longer, she only has one white stripe on her collar and there is a star on her choker. She wears knee high blue boots and gloves reaching her elbows with a blue trim. Her tiara has a blue jewel in it.
